Regional Sport Consultant

Cape Breton Region

 

Sport Nova Scotia is seeking an ambitious and motivated individual with proven experience in sport development at the community level.

A true self-starter, the Regional Sport Consultant is responsible to work with community sport organizations, provincial sport organizations, schools and community groups to identify, collaborate and support the continuation and creation of sustainable sport opportunities in the Cape Breton region.

Reporting to the Manager of Participation Development, the Regional Sport Consultant will be based in Sydney and work closely with the regional manager for the Nova Scotia Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage.

The ideal candidate will have a post-secondary designation in a related field or equivalent work experience in sport administration at the local, provincial or national level. Experience working with multiple stakeholders, communicating effectively, and meeting coordination would be considered assets.

Job Description

The Regional Sport Consultant is responsible to work with community sport organizations, provincial sport organizations, as well as with schools and community groups to identify, collaborate, and support the continuation and creation of sustainable quality sport opportunities in the region.

The Consultant will work closely with the regional manager for the Nova Scotia Department of Community, Culture and Heritage. This position reports to the Manager of Participation Development under the direction of the Director of Sport Development with Sport Nova Scotia.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate/post-secondary degree in Kinesiology, Sport Administration, Sport Management, Health & Human Performance, Physical Education, Recreation Management or equivalent work experience in the field of coaching or administrating sport at the provincial or national level
  • A working knowledge of the Canadian and Nova Scotia sport systems and their components
  • Proven understanding of sport development and programming at the community level
  • Highly organized self starter with project management experience
  • Superior oral and written communication skills

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Serve as first point of contact for Sport Nova Scotia programs and services in the designated region
  • Develop effective working relationships with community sport organizations (“CSOs”) affiliated with provincial sport organizations (“PSOs”)
  • Sport Fund – chair, manage and support the regional delivery of Sport Fund. Utilize Sport Fund to assess program needs, identify resources and establish new opportunities for sport participation in the region.
  • Work closely with the Sport Team (via the Manager of Participation development) and the PSOs to develop Community Sport Organizations in the region.
  • Research and support strategies around the development of physical literacy and Long Term Athlete Development. Work with other regional sport consultants to replicate successful strategies across Nova Scotia.
  • Support communication goals by working with internal and external stakeholders through a variety of platforms (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, traditional media etc.)
  • Develop effective working relationships with schools, community groups, and other organizations in order to support sport programming in the region
  • Identify sport leadership opportunities in the region
  • Present to partners, stakeholders, and all interested organizations on behalf of sport development in the region
  • Work closely with the regional manager for the Nova Scotia Department of Communities Culture and Heritage to ensure awareness and access for community sport organizations to participate in available funding opportunities
  • Act as a champion for Sport Canada’s Long-Term Athlete Development Model and Sport For Life model;
  • Work on projects that strengthen physical literacy by developing fundamental movement and sport skills of children and youth that are compatible with the first three stages of Canadian Sport for Life: Active Start, FUNdamentals, and Learn to Train
  • Support projects that provide opportunities for persons from identified under-represented populations to actively participate in sport, including in roles as athletes, coaches, officials, administrators and volunteer leaders
  • Follow established and approved financial control systems including: reconciliations, expense claim reports, contractual arrangements and others
  • Attend local, regional, and provincial association meetings as required
  • Other duties as directed by the Manager of Participation development
