What Is The Sport Fund?
The Nova Scotia Amateur Sport Fund (Sport Fund) is a recognized Sport Nova Scotia program that is licensed through Sport Nova Scotia for charitable status as a provincial chapter of the Canadian Council of Provincial/Territorial Sport Federations' National Sport Trust Fund (Canada Customs and Revenue Agency, Charitable Registration Number 88938 6868 RR0001.)The Sport Fund has been established to assist and promote the development of athlete-centred amateur sport in Nova Scotia by making financial assistance available to individuals and organizations within the sport system. It assesses applications and allocates funds to Nova Scotia community sport organizations. It enables sport organizations to raise funds and permits eligible donors to receive official tax receipts for their contributions. It offers anyone the opportunity to make a donation to: amateur sport in general; to the Sport Fund's allocation category, community sport organizations; or to the sport of their choice.

How Much Money Is Available?
The Sport Fund is committed to allocating up to $100,000 per fiscal year. This is divided ($50,000 per) between the two allocation rounds (March & September).

Do I Need The Endorsement Of My Provincial Sport Organization (PSO)?
Yes. All applicants require the endorsement of the President of their Provincial Sport Organization to be considered for support through the Sport Fund. Forms are included in each application for this purpose. Applicants must ensure that these signatures/forms are included at the time of submission. I Have An Event/Initiative In The Next 3 Weeks...Can I Apply?
The Sport Fund accepts applications for financial assistance twice each year, with submission deadlines of March 1st and September 1st, respectively. The Allocation Committee meets to review applications within 4 weeks of each application deadline. The Sport Fund does not consider assistance retroactively for projects/ initiatives, therefore applicants are encouraged to plan well in advance of the competition/project, and make submissions in ADVANCE of the event.

When Will I Hear If I Have Been Successful?
Receipt of all completed applications will be acknowledged. Within six weeks of the Allocation Committee meeting, all applicants will receive written notification of the status (success, non-success) of their application. Depending on the decisions of the Allocation Committee, successful applicants may also receive the cheque at this time (if there are no conditions placed upon the award).

What Conditions Exist If I Am Successful?
The Sport Fund Allocation Committee may require further information from successful applicants before the award is released. In these cases, applicants will receive requests in writing. All successful applicants will be expected to report back in writing to the Sport Fund on the outcome of the initiative/project/event that was funded. This may include a report outlining performances, key learnings and impact of the project on the Nova Scotia sport system, demonstration or access to the event, or copies of any documents produced. Successful applicants will also be expected to participate in media events surrounding the promotion of the Sport Fund, and displaying a Sport Fund banner may be required.

What Kind Of Initiatives Have Been Successful In The Past?
Organizations developing innovative recruiting programs, coaches attending workshops/ conferences and coaches travelling to mentor other coaches are examples of initiatives to date. Other examples include developing a sport's officiating program for the province, seeding a new technical director's position and assisting with the establishment of an elite training squad.

What Kind Of Initiatives Have Generally Not Been Successful In The Past?
The Sport Fund does not normally provide funding for athletes and coaches to participate in the Nationals. Generally funding is not usually awarded to athletes and coaches for capital equipment expenditures.

Can I Apply More Than Once?
Yes. An applicant may apply for funding within the same category for different initiatives or apply for funding within the same category and for the same initiative more than once per fiscal year. However, if funding was allocated, the Committee reserves the right to consider this fact when comparing applications, and limit or deny further funding to broaden the number of applicants assisted by the fund.

If I Have Been Successful In The Past Can I Reapply?
Yes. As long as you and your provincial sport organization are in good standing with the Sport Fund. Who Is The Allocation Committee & What Do They Do?
The Allocation Committee is a sub-group of the Nova Scotia Amateur Sport Fund Committee. It is empowered to evaluate submissions and then make recommendations back to the Committee. If a majority of the Committee participates in the allocation process, then its decisions are final.
