April Cleve’s Source for Sports

Athlete of the Month winners announced

HALIFAX, NS (May 25th, 2018)Ellie Black of Halifax has been named Cleve’s Source for Sports Female Individual Athlete of the Month. The twenty-two year-old gymnast recently competed at her second Commonwealth Games where she won gold in the women’s all-around and a silver medal on the vault. Black also made history as she was a part of Team Canada in the women’s team final where Canada won gold for the first time in 28 years.

Matt Fraser
of Antigonish has been named the Cleve’s Source for Sports Male Individual Athlete of the Month. The seventeen year-old boxer recently competed at the 2018 Super Channel Junior Boxing Nationals in Edmonton where he won gold in the youth 49kg weight class. Fraser is currently representing Team Canada at the AMBC Youth Continental Championships in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Jacqueline Foster of Halifax has been named the Cleve’s Source for Sports Female Team Athlete of the Month. As a member of the Canadian women’s lawn bowls team at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Foster competed in both the women’s triples and fours. After advancing to the bronze medal round, both teams finished in fourth place. These results, in addition to those of the women’s singles and pairs teams, led to the best performance for Canadian women’s lawn bowls in Commonwealth Games history.

Also competing in lawn bowls at the 2018 Commonwealth Games was Cameron LeFresne who has been named Cleve’s Source for Sports Male Team Athlete of the Month. The twenty-four year-old from Enfield participated in his first Commonwealth Games where he captained the men’s triples team to a strong fourth place finish. The result was the best finish that Canada has had in men’s triples since it became part of the Commonwealth Games bowls competition in 2006.

The Cleve’s Source for Sports Team of the Month is awarded to Team Graeme Weagle. While competing at the 2018 Under-18 Men’s Canadian Curling Championships, Team Graeme Weagle clinched a gold medal in the final after a convincing 10-4 win over Northern Ontario. Comprising of Graeme Weagle, Owen Purcell, Jeffrey Meagher, and Scott Weagle, the team slipped into the playoff round with a 3-2 record and needed to win four straight games to take home the gold medal.

The Athlete of the Month program is administered by Sport Nova Scotia, whose members are eligible to nominate athletes for the awards. A membership committee selects the award recipients for five possible categories: Male Individual Athlete, Female Individual Athlete, Male Team Athlete, Female Team Athlete, and Team.
