Nova Scotia's top athlete's honoured at the 2018 Support4Sport Awards

Halifax (Saturday, May 26) – Over 400 members of the Nova Scotia sport community congregated at the Halifax convention Centre tonight as Sport Nova Scotia revealed the winners of the 2018 Support4Sport Awards. The prominent annual event honoured the achievements of over 150 athletes, coaches, officials, sponsors, and volunteers from 37 different sports.

“The sport world is as chaotic as it is cherished. Demanding practice schedules and travelling for games doesn’t leave much time for leisure. This is a unique opportunity to take a night off, relax and reflect. The people here tonight have dedicated so much of their lives to sport and we are humbled to honour them,” said Jamie Ferguson, CEO of Sport Nova Scotia.

“Every single nominee should be proud of their accomplishments in sport,” said Bob MacKinnon, President & CEO of the Nova Scotia Gaming Corporation. “As Nova Scotians, we’re proud to celebrate your hard work, dedication and excellence, and to support your passion throughout the year with the Support4Sport program.”

The process of two-fold. First, Provincial Sport Organizations (“PSOs”) submit one nominee per category. These are the “PSO winners”. These winners for each sport then go forward for the overall award in the same category – across all sports. There are two committees reviewed all the selections. These volunteer committees were comprised of leaders of the Provincial Sport Organizations, representatives from the Canadian Sport Centre Atlantic, members of the media, Sport Nova Scotia’s board of directors, and community sport stakeholders. The first committee looked at the nominee’s most outstanding performance of the past year. This is worth 60% of the nominee’s overall score. The top five candidates in each category advanced to the second committee. Members of the second selection committee were charged with looking at “the whole picture” - the overall year, past successes, obstacles, the competitive field, and any other outstanding considerations. This mark was worth 40% of the nominee’s overall score.

The overall winners (across all sports) of the night are:
  • The Support4Sport Team of the Year – Team Kaitlyn Jones, Curling

Funds are raised through the sale of designated lottery products. Each time one of those products are sold, 100 per cent of the proceeds help Nova Scotians get in the game. Since its inception, the program has helped raise over $34 million. Support4Sport is now the largest source of funding for amateur sport in Nova Scotia.
