Cleve’s Source for Sports Athletes of the Month announced

June 25, 2018- Ellie Black is the May Female Individual Athlete of the Month. The gymnast from Halifax achieved outstanding results at the 2018 Canadian Artistic Gymnastics Championships that took place in Waterloo, Ontario from May 23 to 27. Black won the women’s All-Around Title for the fifth consecutive year, as well as gold in both uneven bars and beam, and sliver for her routine in floor. Black’s success solidifies her spot on the Canadian national team where she will continue to represent Canada at international events.

Weightlifter, Quinn Everett is the May Male Individual Athlete of the Month. Everett met success at the 2018 Canadian Senior Weightlifting Championships that took place in Mississauga, Ontario on May 19. Everett won the national title in his +105kg weight class. In addition to his triumph at Nationals, Everett also set the Nova Scotia record in the Snatch and Total and tied the record for the Clean and Jerk.

Artistic gymnast Miguel Hernandez is the May Male Team Athlete of the Month. Hernandez won bronze in both the parallel bars and in the National Open Men’s team event at the Canadian Artistic Gymnastics Championships. The competition took place in Waterloo, Ontario and hosted over 300 competitors from across the country.

The Team of the Month for May goes to the Nova Scotia National Men’s Gymnastics Team. Landon Duquette, Andrew Gallant, Flynn Gurnsey, Miguel Hernandez, Isaiah Jarvis, Ryan Lowe, Alex Miller and Jeremy Sutherland’s performances as a team earned them a bronze medal at the Canadian Artistic Gymnastics Championships at the end of May.

The Athlete of the Month program is administered by Sport Nova Scotia, whose members are eligible to nominate athletes for the awards. A membership committee selects the award recipients for five possible categories: Male Individual Athlete, Female Individual Athlete, Male Team Athlete, Female Team Athlete, and Team.
