Nova Scotian Athletes conquer snow and water
Cleve’s Source for Sports / New Balance Athletes of the Month for March
HALIFAX, NS (Monday, April 20, 2009) – Nova Scotian athletes proved their excellence once again, both on land and in the pool by setting new records throughout the month of March.
Zoë Miles, 17, of Wolfville was named Cleve’s Source for Sports / New Balance Female Athlete of the Month. After swimming in the 2009 Spring Nationals in Toronto, Ontario, Miles placed 22nd in the 200m Butterfly, 35th in the 100m Butterfly and 48th in the 50m Butterfly. Her Senior Girls 200m Freestyle Relay team set a provincial record, while Miles has set six provincial records in March. At the end of March, Miles was named to participate on the Canada Games Women’s Swim Team.
Kristin Joseph D’Eon, 22, of Halifax was named Cleve’s Source for Sports / New Balance Male Individual Athlete of the Month. D’Eon came in sixth in the Parallel Giant Slalom, and ninth in the Parallel Slalom at the Canadian National Alpine Championships in Tremblant, Quebec. This is the highest level attainable in Alpine Snowboard competition in Canada, and it has guaranteed him a spot on the National Development Team.
Jo-Jo Ur, 17, was named Cleve’s Source for Sports / New Balance Male Team Athlete of the Month. Swimming at the 2009 Spring Nationals in Toronto, Ontario, he participated in three relays helping the team to place in the top 16. A new provincial record was set for all three relays. Out of 100 competitors, Ur came 20th in the 50m Freestyle, 25th in the 100m Freestyle, and 28th in the 50m Backstroke. At the East Coast Championships held in P.E.I in March, he brought home four gold medals, a silver and a bronze.
The Cleve’s Source for Sports / New Balance Athlete of the Month program is administered by Sport Nova Scotia, whose members are eligible to nominate athletes for the awards. A membership committee selects the award recipients for five possible categories: Male Individual Athlete, Female Individual Athlete, Male Team Athlete, Female Team Athlete, and Team.
