Bringing home the medals
Cleve’s Source for Sports / New Balance Athletes of the Month for July

HALIFAX, NS (Monday, August 17, 2009) – Nova Scotian athletes were on top of their game during the month of July and have the medals to prove it.

David Sharpe, 18, of Halifax was named Cleve’s Source for Sports / New Balance Male Individual Athlete of the Month after winning a gold in the 200m Butterfly, silver in both the 100m Backstroke and 100m Butterfly and a bronze in the 100m Individual Medley at the 2009 Canadian Age Group Nationals in Montreal, Quebec. Sharpe also competed at the 2009 FISU Universiade Games achieving a personal best time in the 100m Backstroke.  He has now set or reset eight new Nova Scotia provincial records between the two meets. Sharpe has been named Nova Scotia’s flag bearer for the closing ceremonies of the 2009 Canada Summer Games.

Kristen Vandenberg, 23, of Halifax was named Cleve’s Source for Sports / New Balance Female Individual Athlete of the Month after bringing home a gold medal in the 10km open water swim at the 2009 Canadian World Swimming Trials in Montreal Quebec. Vandenberg scored a personal best time in the 1500m women’s freestyle and placed 12th. She is also a member of the women’s 4x200m Freestyle Relay team that set a new Nova Scotia Provincial record.

Pauline McLeod, 18, of Belnan, Nova Scotia was named Cleve’s Source for Sports / New Balance Female Team Athlete of the Month for helping the Women’s Team Kumite earn a silver medal at the Canadian National Karate Championships in Calgary, Alberta. McLeod’s attitude and fighting spirit helped her defeat the same fighter who had defeated her in the Under 21 Women 60+ kg match and move on the final round of competition.

The Cleve’s Source for Sports / New Balance Athlete of the Month program is administered by Sport Nova Scotia, whose members are eligible to nominate athletes for the awards. A membership committee selects the award recipients for five possible categories: Male Individual Athlete, Female Individual Athlete, Male Team Athlete, Female Team Athlete, and Team.
