Sport Nova Scotia says good-bye to long-time sport supporter

HALIFAX, NS (Monday, February 23, 2009) – Today, Sport Nova Scotia and the sport community say good-bye to Marlene Collins (Mullenger) who passed away on Sunday, February 22 in Amherst, Nova Scotia.  

At 77, Ms Collins continued to believe in the power of sport and never tired of delivering positive messages about sports’ benefits.  After graduating from the Maritime Business College, Ms Collins dedicated herself to many sport organizations around the province.  Here at Sport Nova Scotia she served as volunteer treasurer on the board and worked as a staff member for over 17 years.  

While working at Sport Nova Scotia, she touched every aspect of the organization, spending time overseeing the financial administrative services and also working with members to expand their reach and bring more sport opportunities to Nova Scotians across the province.  

“She was a major source of enthusiasm for sport and was instrumental in creating the organization that Sport Nova Scotia has become,” says Jamie Ferguson, CEO, Sport Nova Scotia.  “She knew that sport can make a positive difference in each person’s life.  Ms Collins was a long-serving employee and volunteer for our organization and we will always be grateful for her vision and her passion.”

After retiring from Sport Nova Scotia, Ms Collins received a honourary membership with Sport Nova Scotia.  She was one of only three Nova Scotians who have received this award.  

Along with this accomplishment, she was also Nova Scotia’s representative on the National Advisory Council on Fitness and Amateur Sport from 1975 until 1980 and was named

Sport Nova Scotia Executive of the Year in 1975.  She was Past President and Charter member of the Mayflower Curling Club and a member of the Amherst Golf Club.    

Sport Nova Scotia and our member organizations extend our sincere thanks and sympathy to Ms Collins’ family.
