Second Annual Fundraising Event to Support Nova Scotia Athletes
HALIFAX, NS (November 10, 2009) – Nova Scotia’s sport community is set to raise their glasses to extra funding thanks to the second annual Taste of Gold fundraiser.
The Taste of Gold event will be held at the World Trade and Convention Centre tonight and will feature great food, athletics and entertainment. Proceeds will benefit Sport Nova Scotia’s KidSport™ program, and high-performance training groups for current and future Olympic athletes through the Canadian Sport Centre Atlantic.
“We’re thrilled to be part of something that truly touches the entire sport system from playground to podium,”says Ken Bagnell, President Canadian Sport Centre Atlantic. The high-performance training groups support group athletes and coaches and recognized as current or future Nova Scotia Olympians. Nova Scotia athletes are strongly supportive of this event. Tonight more than 12 athletes will participate, including: Andrew Russell, Adrienne Power, Alex Duckworth, Richard Dalton and Paul Tingley. Paul Tingley, a paralympic gold medallist, will be sharing his story with students at a local school this afternoon.
For the second year, Doctors Nova Scotia is the presenting sponsor. The organization has been a long-time supporter of amateur sport organizations in the province. “The proceeds of this event will help the smallest and biggest dreams come true. By supporting children today, we are helping them to develop and maintain physically active and mentally stimulating lifestyles,” said Dr. Ross Leighton, president of Doctors Nova Scotia. “Doctors Nova Scotia is proud to be connected to this incredible event.”
“All funds raised from this event will stay in Nova Scotia, and support our sport system,” says Jamie Ferguson, CEO, Sport Nova Scotia. “It’s not often we’re able to have an event this size that will not only raise funds but also raise the profile of sport in our province.”
The KidSport™ fund provides financial assistance to hundreds of Nova Scotian children each year so they can reap the benefits of sport participation. “We know that children who participate in sport and physical activity are more likely to be healthier,” says Ferguson. “We also know they’re more likely to do well in school, and less likely to come into contact with the criminal justice system. Sport gives children a head start on life, and Sport Nova Scotia’s KidSport™ program helps children get the head start they deserve.”
In addition to Doctors Nova Scotia, sponsors for the 2nd annual Taste of Gold include Deloitte (premiere sponsor), Molson Coors Canada, Revolve 360 Branding, The Chronicle Herald, Tour Tech East and Zed Events.
