Nova Scotian athletes give their all 
Cleve’s Source for Sports / New Balance Athletes of the Month for October

HALIFAX, NS (Tuesday, November 24, 2009) – Nova Scotian athletes gave their all at competitions during the month of October.

Denise Robson, 40, of Dartmouth was named Cleve’s Source for Sports / New Balance Female Individual Athlete of the Month after placing third in the elite women’s division at the Canadian 10km Road Race Championships. This was a personal best time of 34:58 seconds for Robson who was the leading member of the winning team from Nova Scotia. Robson has also qualified to compete at the Chiba Ekiden Relay held on November 23, 2009 in Chiba-City, Japan.

John Mattatall, 26, of Montreal was named Cleve’s Source for Sports / New Balance Male Team Athlete of the Month.  John and his partner, Mylène Brodeur, placed sixth in the senior pairs after finishing fourth in the free skate and seventh in the short program at the Rostelecom Cup. Mattatall and his partner are ranked 11 in the ISU Grand Prix rankings. The pair placed third at Nationals 2009, and tenth at 2009 Worlds.

Victoria Parkinson, 16, of Dartmouth was named Cleve’s Source for Sports / New Balance Female Team Athlete of the Month. After attending the Under-16 All Stars soccer tournament in July 2009, Parkinson was the only player selected from the Atlantic Provinces to participate in a nine-day soccer camp in Quebec. Parkinson has also been a member of the NTC Atlantic, NS Under-17 Provincial Team and attended the Canada Games in P.E.I.

Hockey Nova Scotia Female Under-17 Team, of Halifax, was named Cleve’s Source for Sports / New Balance Team of the Month. Together they won a gold medal after competing at the Atlantic Challenge Cup in Moncton, New Brunswick. The team’s success in this tournament led in nine players being chosen to represent Atlantic Canada in the National U18 competition. Nova Scotia players from the Hockey Nova Scotia Under-17 Team make up almost half of the National team (9 of 20 players).

The Cleve’s Source for Sports / New Balance Athlete of the Month program is administered by Sport Nova Scotia, whose members are eligible to nominate athletes for the awards. A membership committee selects the award recipients for five possible categories: Male Individual Athlete, Female Individual Athlete, Male Team Athlete, Female Team Athlete, and Team.
