Nova Scotian athletes take the podium
Cleve’s Source for Sports / New Balance Athletes of the Month for August
HALIFAX, NS (Monday, September 21, 2009) – Nova Scotian athletes take the podium in many International Competition this month.
Geoff Myatt, 18, of Sydney was named Cleve’s Source for Sports / New Balance Male Individual Athlete of the Month after winning a gold medal in the discuss competition at the 2009 Canada Summer Games in Prince Edward Island. Myatt, ranked 6th going in was one of the youngest competitors in the event. His performance was a personal best at 49.41m, which was six meters further than his previous best throws and two meters further than the next best competitor.
Cheryl Meisner, 27, of Hubbards was named Cleve’s Source for Sports / New Balance Female Individual Athlete of the Month after placing first in both the FEI Grand Prix, and the FEI Grand Prix Freestyle at the Beaulieu International Dressage Classic in Beaulieu, Quebec. Meisner scored a 68.426 per cent and a 73.750 per cent in the events, which gives her another qualifying mark towards the 2010 World Equestrian Games in Kentucky.
Lauren Morse, 17, of Berwich, Nova Scotia was named Cleve’s Source for Sports / New Balance Female Team Athlete of the Month for helping her Team Canada East bring home a silver medal at Ringette’s U19 World Championships in Prague, Czech Republic. Morse plays forward and was awarded M.V.P in the semi-final game. By placing in this event, Morse will now be considered for Canada’s national team.
Sailors Ted Skiffington and Jonathan Reid of Halifax, Nova Scotia were named Cleve’s Source for Sports / New Balance Team of the Month. Together the pair won a gold medal in the Men’s 29 Class at the 2009 Canada Summer Games in Prince Edward Island. This was the first gold medal in a double-handed boat in more than 20 years.
The Cleve’s Source for Sports / New Balance Athlete of the Month program is administered by Sport Nova Scotia, whose members are eligible to nominate athletes for the awards. A membership committee selects the award recipients for five possible categories: Male Individual Athlete, Female Individual Athlete, Male Team Athlete, Female Team Athlete, and Team.
