Nova Scotian athletes raise the bar for 2010
Cleve’s Source for Sports / New Balance Athletes of the Month for January
HALIFAX, NS (Monday, February 22, 2010) – Nova Scotian athletes start the New Year off with a bang.
Paul Tingley, 39, of Halifax was named Cleve’s Source for Sports / New Balance Male Individual Athlete of the Month. A member of the Canadian Sailing Team, Tingley finished first at the Miami Olympic Class Regatta. The Regatta was an ISAF Sailing World Cup event, where he competed against both disabled and able-bodied individuals. Tingley is a 2008 Paralympic champion winning the gold medal.
Snowboarder Alexandra Duckworth, 22, of Kingsburg was named Cleve’s Source for Sports / New Balance Female Individual Athlete of the Month after placing third overall at Canada’s first Slopestyle World Cup in Calgary, Alberta. Representing Canada at the event, her bronze medal is just one of the many accomplishments she had in January, including finishing eighth at the Stoneham World Cup Half pipe, and 12th at the North American Halfpipe Championships.
John Mattatall, 27, was named Cleve’s Source for Sports / New Balance Male Team Athlete of the Month. John and his partner Mylène Brodeur finished fourth at the Canadian National Figure Skating Championships with 167.01 points. They also came in seventh at the International Four Continents Championships last month. The Nationals fourth place finish was a personal best for the pair, who are currently ranked 15th in the world.
InNOVAtion, the figure skating synchro team, of Dartmouth was named Cleve’s Source for Sports / New Balance Team of the Month. InNOVAtion secured a first-place finish at the 2010 Atlantic Regional Synchronized Skating Championships. With 45.95 points, the teams personal best, they are now qualified for Nationals in March. The team is made up of skaters from across Nova Scotia who get together regularly to practice.
The Cleve’s Source for Sports / New Balance Athlete of the Month program is administered by Sport Nova Scotia, whose members are eligible to nominate athletes for the awards. A membership committee selects the award recipients for five possible categories: Male Individual Athlete, Female Individual Athlete, Male Team Athlete, Female Team Athlete, and Team.
