Nova Scotian athletes set records and personal bests
Cleve’s Source for Sports / New Balance Athletes of the Month for December

HALIFAX, NS (Monday, January 18, 2010) –  Nova Scotian athletes gave it their all to set new national records and personal bests during competitions in December.

Daniel Murphy, 20, of Bedford was named Cleve’s Source for Sports / New Balance Male Individual Athlete of the Month. Murphy placed fifth in the 200m Freestyle, sixth in the 50m Freestyle and seventh in the 100m Freestyle individual swims at the 2009 World Swimming IPC championships. With these results, he set two Canadian records for the 200m and 50m Freestyle in the S5 class. This was his first national team event and all of these results at the World Swimming IPC championships were personal best times.

Denise Robson, 41, of Dartmouth was named Cleve’s Source for Sports / New Balance Female Individual Athlete of the Month after placing fifth overall among the women in the California International Marathon in Sacramento, California. Robson came in second in the 40+ Masters division and, with over 5,000 competitors, she was the third best Canadian in the marathon.

Paige Elliot, 15, and Matthew Webb, 15 of Tantallon were named Cleve’s Source for Sports / New Balance Team of the Month. Elliot and Webb finished 26th in the Pre-novice Dance (figure skating) competition at the East/West Challenge in Mississauga, Ontario. This is the top competition for the Pre-novice Dance and was their first event together. They are working towards earning a spot on the 2011 Canada Games Team.

Alex Green, 18, of Fall River was named Cleve’s Source for Sports / New Balance Male Team Athlete of the Month. A provincial champion, Alex and his partner Jayden Rau finished 18th in the Novice Dance (figure skating) competition at the East/West Challenge in Mississauga, Ontario. Missing the chance to compete at the National Championships by less than a point, they are on their way to becoming one of Nova Scotia’s outstanding Novice Dance teams.
