Milk Sport Fair Seeks to Increase Physical Activity Among Youth
AMHERST, NS (May 3, 2010) – Over 3,100 elementary and junior high school students are set to participate in Milk Sport Fair, an event expo aimed to improve sport participation and reduce physical inactivity among youth.
From May 5 -7, students from schools throughout the Chignecto-Central Regional School Board will be bussed to Amherst Stadium where they will have the opportunity to try or learn over 15 sports ranging from golf to lacrosse and tae kwon do to field hockey.
“Our goal is to bring sports to youth. By having sport representatives on hand to explain, demonstrate and teach, youth can find the fun in sport,” says Jamie Ferguson, CEO of Sport Nova Scotia which organizes the event. “We want to help youth find sports that make them want to be active.”
Studies show children who participate in sport are more likely to be healthy, do better in school, and less likely to break the law. Sport also increases self-esteem in youth and reduces anxiety and stress.
“The event is truly interactive. Kids will be one-on-one with someone who will show them how to swing a club, a racquet or a bat. They can learn the basics of sports they have never tried. And they can find out how to become involved in local sports and activities,” says Ferguson.
Milk Sport Fair started in Halifax eight years ago as a pilot project to improve sport participation and reduce physical inactivity in the province. It proved so successful, Sport Nova Scotia decided to take the event on the road. Since its inception, over 35,000 students, teachers and parents have participated in the Milk Sport Fair.
Milk Sport Fair’s Title Sponsor is Dairy Farmers of Canada. "We are very proud to be part of the Milk Sport Fair,” says Solange Heiss, Assistant Director, Marketing and Nutrition Communications at Dairy Farmers of Canada. "When you team up physical activity and good healthy eating habits all under one roof the result is a win-win combination for all. This event really reaches the students in a way that they can get information, touch and see several sports in action and learn about the benefits of chocolate milk as a sport recovery drink."
The event has been to Cape Breton (fall 2005 and 2006), the Annapolis Valley (spring 2006 and 2007), Antigonish (fall 2007 and 2008), Yarmouth (spring 2008 and 2009), and Halifax (fall 2009).
Presenting sponsors are Doctors Nova Scotia and Nova Scotia Health Promotion and Protection. Additional sponsors include the Town of Amherst, the Chronicle Herald, Canadian Springs, Farmers Cooperative Dairy Ltd., Subway, and the Chignecto-Central Regional School Board.
