Whitney Lohnes and Paul Tingley Honoured

HALIFAX, NS (Friday, August 15, 2010) – Seventeen year-old Whitney Lohnes of Bridgewater placed third at the Junior Pan-American Judo Championships in Orland, Florida in September. This was on the heels of a gold medal in Judo at the Junior National Judo Championships this past summer. Lohnes, voted the Cleve’s Source for Sports/New Balance Individual Female Athlete of the Month, is now setting her sights on the world championships.

Paul Tingley of Halifax battled 85 of the world’s best sailors from over 15 countries to win a gold medal at the 2.4 mR Class Open World Championships in Holland last month. This is Paul’s first gold at the World level in an open category, which means he competed against able-bodied athletes as well, including Stellan Berlin, a six-time world champion from Sweden. The win is a fine addition to his other awards including a 2008 Paralympics gold medal. Tingley was voted this month’s Cleve’s Source for Sports/New Balance Individual Male Athlete of the Month.

The Athlete of the Month program is administered by Sport Nova Scotia, whose members are eligible to nominate athletes for the awards. A membership committee selects the award recipients for five possible categories: Male Individual Athlete, Female Individual Athlete, Male Team Athlete, Female Team Athlete, and Team.
