Sean Berrigan, Olivia Feschuk, John Mattatal, and Riverview Eclipse named Sport Chek Athletes and Team of the Month for January
 
HALIFAX, NS (Wednesday, February 9, 2011) – 15-year-old swimmer Sean Berrigan of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia picks up the title of January’s Sport Chek Male Individual Athlete of the Month for an impressive performance at the Acadia Senior Meet, which took place in mid-January. His results included placing fourth in the 100m Butterfly, fifth in the 200m Backstroke, sixth in the 50m Backstroke and 200m Individual Medley, and eleventh in the 50m Freestyle categories. During the week following the event, Sean set a new provincial record at an in-house competition in the Men’s 15-17 50m Breaststroke.

In other swimming news, Halifax’s Olivia Feschuk, also 15 years old, brought home five gold medals from the Acadia Senior Meet in the categories of 1500m Freestyle, 400m Freestyle, 200m Freestyle, 200m Breaststroke, and 50m Butterfly. These accomplishments earn Olivia the honour of Sport Chek Female Individual Athlete of the Year for January.

John Mattatall, 28, clinches the award for Sport Chek Male Team Athlete of the Month for January. He placed fourth at the BMO Skate Canada Championships, held last month in Victoria, BC. John competed in this national competition with his partner Mylene Brodeur. Both have earned spots on the national team.

The designation of Sport Chek Team of the Month for January goes to Bedford, Nova Scotia’s Riverview Eclipse Pre-Novice Figure Skating – Synchro team for bringing home a fourth place finish and personal best score (27.39) from the Atlantic Regional Synchronized Skating Championships, held in Mount Pearl, NL last month.

The Athlete of the Month program is administered by Sport Nova Scotia, whose members are eligible to nominate athletes for the awards. A membership committee selects the award recipients for five possible categories: Male Individual Athlete, Female Individual Athlete, Male Team Athlete, Female Team Athlete, and Team.
