Hugh Smith and Madison Faulkner named Athletes of the Month for May
 
HALIFAX, NS (Wednesday, June 29, 2011) – Artistic gymnast Hugh Smith receives the title of Sport Chek Male Individual Athlete of the Month for the month of May. A Dartmouth resident, 27-year-old Smith finished second overall in the senior category, with a first place finish on the vault apparatus, at the 2011 Canadian Gymnastics Championships held this year in Charlottetown, PEI. This puts him in contention for the World Championships in October, which also serve as the Olympic qualifiers.

The honour of Sport Chek Female Individual Athlete of the Month for May goes to 14-year-old Middle Sackville gymnast Madison Faulkner for her recent national-level performance. In addition to her noteworthy accomplishments which include earning a silver medal in the Vault event, placing 7th in Floor Exercise, and finishing 9th overall in the National Open category at the same 2011 Canadian National Gymnastics Championships as mentioned above, Madison also won a special award for Most Dynamic Vault in the competition.

The Athlete of the Month program is administered by Sport Nova Scotia, whose members are eligible to nominate athletes for the awards. A membership committee selects the award recipients for five possible categories: Male Individual Athlete, Female Individual Athlete, Male Team Athlete, Female Team Athlete, and Team.
