Daniel Murphy, Taylor Stutely, Alison Keough, Travis Adams, and the Nova Scotia 17U Boys’ Basketball Team named Sport Chek Athletes and Team of the Month for August
 
HALIFAX, NS (Thursday, September 29, 2011) – 20-year-old swimmer Danial Murphy of Bedford, NS has earned the title of Sport Chek Male Individual Athlete of the Month for August. Danial set some personal best times and two Canadian national records at the Para Pan Pacific Championships, one in the 50m Freestyle event and one in the 100m Freestyle event. He placed fourth overall in his individual events.

The Sport Chek Female Individual Athlete of the Month award goes to Taylor Stutely of Port Williams, NS. The 15-year-old track and field athlete won the gold medal in the under-18 women’s discus event at the Royal Canadian Legion Youth Championships (a national event) held in August in Ottawa, ON. This win marked a new Canadian record and has helped Taylor earn the rank of #1 in Canada for midget girls’ discus, which can be added to her rank of #1 in Canada for midget girls’ shot put.

Alison Keough of Marion Bridge, NS receives the title of Sport Chek Female Team Athlete of the Month for being named a first team all-star for helping to lead Nova Scotia to a strong fourth place finish at the 2011 17U Girls’ National Championships held this year in Winnipeg, MB. 16-year-old Alison personally averaged 16 points and 10 rebounds throughout the championships.

Halifax’s Travis Adams has clinched the honour of Sport Chek Male Team Athlete of the Month for  leading the Nova Scotia 17U boys’ basketball team to a silver medal finish at the 2011 17U Boys’ National Championships, held in August in Toronto, ON. For his contribution, averaging 14 points and 10 rebounds per game throughout the six-day tournament, 16-year-old Travis was named a first team all-star.

More on the Nova Scotia 17U boys’ basketball team as they were named Sport Chek Team of the Month for their silver medal accomplishment mentioned just above. They defeated two-time defending national champs Quebec in the round robin, aiding in their first place finish within their pool. The team then went on to defeat Newfoundland in the quarter-finals and Alberta in the semis, only to come up a bit short with a 12 point deficit in the finals against Ontario.

The Athlete of the Month program is administered by Sport Nova Scotia, whose members are eligible to nominate athletes for the awards. A membership committee selects the award recipients for five possible categories: Male Individual Athlete, Female Individual Athlete, Male Team Athlete, Female Team Athlete, and Team.
