Danial Murphy, Karen Black, Matthew Webb, and Shaelyn Griffin & Cody Husk named Sport Chek Athletes of the Month for December
HALIFAX, NS (Tuesday, January 31, 2012) – The title of Sport Chek Male Individual Athlete of the Month goes to Bedford’s Danial Murphy. The 21-year-old swimmer brought home four gold medals (100m backstroke, 200m freestyle, 100m freestyle, and 50m fly), a silver medal (50m backstroke), and a bronze (50m freestyle) from the Para Can-Am Championships held in La Mirada, California in December. Danial’s efforts set two Canadian para records; one in the 50m freestyle category, and one in the 100m freestyle category. His performance also earned him two qualifying standards for the 2012 Paralympics.
The honour of Sport Chek Female Individual Athlete of the Month was earned by 18-year-old figure skater Karen Black. The Halifax native placed 26th out of 52 competitors at the Eastern & Western Challenge, a national event held this year in Regina, Saskatchewan. Karen had an overall personal best of 62.69 and a free program personal best of 39.96, which is almost three points higher than her provincial competition result.
December’s Sport Chek Male Team Athlete of the Month is none other than Matthew Webb. An 18-year-old figure skater, Matthew placed 16th out of 22 in the Novice Dance category of the Eastern & Western Challenge mentioned above. He achieved personal best results in the pattern dances and in the free dance, totaling a personal best overall score of 64.02.
In other figure skating news, the award for Sport Chek Team of the Month for December goes to 12-year old Shaelyn Griffin & 16-year-old Cody Husk, of Lower Sackville and Windsor Junction respectively. The duo achieved a personal best score of 46.07, also at the Eastern & Western Challenge.
The Athlete of the Month program is administered by Sport Nova Scotia, whose members are eligible to nominate athletes for the awards. A membership committee selects the award recipients for five possible categories: Male Individual Athlete, Female Individual Athlete, Male Team Athlete, Female Team Athlete, and Team.
