Biography: For one week in March, 1951, the eyes of Nova Scotia were focused on Kentville’s Glooscap Curling Club as they competed for the MacDonald Brier at the old Dalhousie Arena. The team of Don Oyler, George Hansen, Fred Dyke, and Wally Knock opened the 22nd annual curling classic with a 2-0 record against Saskatchewan and Ontario, and never looked back.

The team never trailed an opponent after the second end during the entire competition. It could not have been a more dramatic finish, with Nova Scotia having to face the last two challengers, Manitoba and British Columbia, on the final day. The team from Kentville scored a 12-7 victory over Manitoba and a 10-5 win over British Columbia. for the title. They became the first team to be a perfect 10-0 at the MacDonald Brier.

All week, the Valley foursome was seldom in any serious trouble, making shots when necessary. However, it did not come without hard work. The team came together in 1950 and practised two hours a day, trying various shots and weights while gaining the most important ingredient in competition: confidence. By the end of the week, the team outscored their opposition 116-60, earning claims as one of the best rinks ever entered in championship play. When the MacDonald Brier was retired after the 1979 competition, no other team had gone undefeated in ten games (round robin) for that 28-year period. The Glooscap team was the first to win all ten games after Newfoundland joined the competition for a total of eleven teams.

Team members were: Fred Dyke (second), George Hansen (mate), Wally Knock (lead), and Don Oyler (skip).

Facts: • Swept through 10 games undefeated to win the title
