A national, not-for-profit organizations with licensed chapters in nine provinces and one territory (with local chapters in 178 communities across Canada); KidSport was initiated to make sport opportunities available to all children regardless of their social or economic status.  KidSport’s mission is to remove the financial barriers that prevent children in financial need from participating in sport.

Managed and operated in Nova Scotia by Sport Nova Scotia since 1994, KidSport has assisted over 30,000 children totalling over $7.4 Million. KidSport provides funding up to $300 per year per child for sport registration and/or equipment.  In 2019, KidSport Nova Scotia granted over $679,000 to 2,419 children from Sydney to Yarmouth.  KidSport helps put these children on an equal playing field with their peers, giving them the self-confidence to become leaders of tomorrow.

Although there is overwhelming evidence of the positive impact of sport, the reality is that the costs for sport registration, equipment and travel are beyond the reach of many Nova Scotians.  In fact, one third of Canadian parents with children under the age of 18 have been unable to register their children in organized sports due to expenses.  According to the Canadian Council on Social Development, “about three-quarters of children in low-income families rarely participate in organized sports, compared to one-quarter of children in high-income families.”

Sport provides much more than just trophies and medals.  Sport helps to shape the lives of our youth by promoting the benefits of teamwork, fair-play, hard work and perseverance.  Too many children in Nova Scotia and across Canada are sitting on the sidelines dreaming of the day they can play the sport of their choice.  KidSport helps to break down the barriers to participation So ALL Kids Can Play!
